A light, sensitive rod
Softbait rods
6'10" to 7'3", 7 to 28g, PE0.6 to 1.2
A fast, light-tipped spinning rod that casts a quarter-ounce jighead, telegraphs the bite and still has the backbone to turn a big snapper off the reef.

Matched to the rod
Softbaiting reels
3000 to 4000 size, 9 to 12kg of drag
A 3000 or 4000 spinning reel balances a 7ft softbait rod, holds 150m plus of thin braid, and gives a fast retrieve for picking up slack on the drop.

The bait
Softbaits
Jerkshads, paddle tails, grubs and prawns
Scented, durable plastics in the shapes snapper eat. Carry two or three shapes and swap when the bite slows.

The business end
Jigheads
1/4 to 1oz, 3/0 to 6/0 hooks
Strong, sharp hooks with a keeper that holds the plastic. Match the weight to depth and current, and the hook size to the bait.
The setup
The setup in numbers
A balanced snapper softbait outfit, from the products in this guide.
Rod
Rated 7 to 28g and PE0.6 to 1.2. Fast action for casting light jigheads and feeling the bite; enough power for a 10kg snapper.
Reel
Spinning reels with 9 to 12kg of drag and a fast gear ratio, 77 to 101cm per turn across the reels here.
Braid
Thin 8-strand braid, 14 to 30lb, 150 to 200m. Thin line sinks faster and keeps the jighead in touch.
Leader
A rod length of fluorocarbon for abrasion on reef and foul. Go heavier around kelp and rocks, lighter over sand.
Jighead
Lighter in shallow water and slack tide, heavier in depth and current. 3/0 to 5/0 hooks suit 5in baits.

Softbaits
Which softbait shape when
Four shapes cover most snapper fishing. Each tile links to the shape collection; prices and stock are live.

The all-day snapper bait
Jerkshads
5 to 8in, split or straight tail
A slender baitfish profile with an erratic darting action on the twitch and a natural flutter on the drop. The Z-Man Jerk ShadZ and Halco Flick Stick are the NZ standards.

Built-in action on a straight wind
Paddle tails
3 to 5in, thumping tail
A paddle tail kicks and wiggles on both fast and slow retrieves, so they fish well on a plain lift-and-wind when the fish want movement.

Slow days and light jigheads
Grubs and curly tails
2 to 9in, thin curly tail
Ultra-thin tails come alive on the lightest jigheads and slowest retrieves. A good change-up when a jerkshad is being ignored.

Natural forage, fished slowly
Prawns and shrimp
3 to 7in, realistic profile
Sculpted prawn imitations for a slow roll or twitch near the bottom, where snapper feed on crustaceans.

The durable, scented standardZ-Man plastics are made from 10X Tough ElaZtech, which stretches and recovers instead of tearing, so one bait survives fish after fish. The Jerk ShadZ, PaddlerZ and Curly TailZ carry Pro-Cure scent, and the range runs from 2in finesse grubs to the 8in StreakZ.

Snapper jigheads
Strong hooks, held baitsA snapper jighead needs a strong, chemically sharpened hook and a keeper that holds the plastic through casts and missed hits. The TT HeadlockZ HD runs Mustad hooks from 1/20 to 2oz, the Atomic Seekerz Gamakatsu hooks, and the Ocean Angler Lightbulb a UV finish for low light and deeper water.

Softbaiting braid and leaders
Thin braid, fluoro leaderThin 8-strand braid is the heart of softbaiting: it sinks faster, casts further and transmits the bite. X-Braid Upgrade X8 and Pentagram run from PE0.4 to PE3, and the Daiwa Dura Sensor X4 is the value option. Tie on a rod length of fluorocarbon leader; the X-Braid FC Absorber Slim and Strong starts at 15lb.

How to fish a softbait for snapper
Four habits that turn casts into snapper. Prices and stock are live in every section above.
Cast ahead of the drift
Cast up-current or ahead of the boat's drift so the bait sinks naturally on a semi-slack line. Most bites come on the drop, so watch the line for a tick or a sudden slackening.
Lift, drop, wind
Once the bait touches down, lift the rod tip a metre, drop it and wind up the slack. Two or three lifts, then let it sit. Vary the pace until the fish tell you what they want.
Don't strike at the first tap
Snapper often mouth a softbait before committing. Wind until the rod loads, then lift firmly. A sharp strike on braid pulls the bait away.
Stay in touch with the bottom
If you lose contact, go up a jighead weight or let out less line. Use a drogue to slow the drift and keep the bait near-vertical in wind or current.
Softbaiting FAQ
Softbaiting for snapper
What size reel do I need for softbaiting?
What size reel do I need for softbaiting?
A 3000 or 4000 spinning reel. It balances a 7ft rod, holds 150m or more of PE1 braid and gives a fast retrieve for picking up slack. Every reel in this guide has 9 to 12kg of drag, more than enough for snapper.
What braid should I spool?
What braid should I spool?
PE0.8 to PE1.5, around 14 to 30lb, in an 8-strand braid such as X-Braid Upgrade X8. Thin braid sinks faster and transmits the bite. Add a rod length of 15 to 30lb fluorocarbon leader.
How heavy a jighead?
How heavy a jighead?
Start at 1/4 to 3/8oz in 10 to 20m and slack tide, and go up to 3/4 or 1oz in deeper water or current. If you can't feel the bottom, go heavier. Hook size 3/0 to 5/0 suits most 5in baits.
Which softbait colour?
Which softbait colour?
Carry a natural pattern for clear water and bright days, and a bright or dark high-contrast pattern for dirty water and low light. Shape and retrieve usually matter more than colour.
