A softbait reel needs to hold about 200m of PE1, wind fast enough to stay in touch with a jighead on the drop, and give line smoothly to a big snapper on a light leader. This guide picks the best spinning reels we stock at each budget across Shimano, Daiwa and Major Craft, pairs each with a rod from our softbait rod guide, and has three ready-made rod, reel and XBraid kits.

Size and line

The right size and line capacity

A 3000 holding about 200m of PE1 is the standard softbait reel.

3000

The standard

Shimano C3000 and Daiwa LT3000: light enough for a 7ft rod, with 9 to 10kg of drag in reserve.

2500

Harbour finesse

A 2500, often with a shallow S spool, for PE0.6 to 0.8 and light jigheads.

4000

Deeper and bigger

A 4000 for PE1 to 1.5, heavier jigheads in current, and workups with kingfish about.

200m

About 200m of PE1

Enough for a long run and a few break-offs. Most of the 3000s here list PE1-200m or more.

S spool

Shallow spools

S models hold PE0.6 to 0.8 without backing, so the spool fills to the lip and casts long.

2mm

Fill it right

Fill the braid to about 2mm below the lip; overfilling throws loops on the cast.

Gear ratio

Why gear ratio matters for softbaits

More line per turn keeps you in touch with the jighead.

93 to 94cm

Extra high gear

XG and XH 3000s wind 93 to 94cm per turn, from the published specs.

75 to 80cm

Standard gear

Standard 3000s wind 75 to 80cm per turn: fine for bait, slow for softbaits.

Slack

Pick up slack on the drop

Most bites come as the softbait sinks. A fast reel takes up the slack so you feel them.

Reset

Fast resets

In a workup, a fast reel gets the softbait back and out again before the fish move on.

Slow

You can always wind slower

A fast reel can wind slowly; a slow reel can't wind fast when you need it.

HG

The middle ground

HG and H gears wind 84 to 91cm per turn: a compromise if you also fish bait or lures that need a slow wind.

Drag

A smooth drag for light leaders

A sticky start snaps a light leader; smooth drag saves it.

1

Set it to about a third

A common rule: set the drag to about a third of the leader's strength, so about 2 to 3kg on a 15 to 20lb leader.

2

Max drag is the ceiling

You won't fish at 9 or 10kg on a softbait leader; it is the reel's ceiling, not a setting.

3

Look after it

Tighten the drag to rinse, then back it off to store so the washers don't compress.

Daiwa's ATD and Shimano's Duracross drags are both built for smooth starts on light line
